History

140 years of hospitality

Originally a private residence, Villa Castagnola preserves the innate charm of its origins: a timeless elegance shaped by rare atmospheres and genuine warmth.
Here, hospitality has always been a true art.

The history of the Villa

1880

Origins

The history of Villa Castagnola begins in 1880, when the noble Russian Von Ritter family established their residence on the shores of Lake Lugano, at the foot of Monte Brè.

1885

From private Villa to guest house

Acquired in 1885 by the Schnyder von Wartensee family, the elegant villa was gradually transformed into a guest house and ultimately into a prestigious hotel.

1982

The Garzoni family

In 1982, Villa Castagnola came under the care of the Garzoni family of Lugano, beginning a fresh chapter of development and distinction. Guided by enlightened vision, the family upgraded the infrastructure, unified the decor, and extended the villa with two additional floors and elegant meeting spaces, ultimately establishing it as a luxury hotel in 1985.

2002

Art in the Spotlight

In 2002, the owners acquired the Hotel Du Midi and transformed it into the Art Residence al Lago. On the ground floor, a sophisticated Art Gallery was established, strengthening the Villa’s enduring connection to the world of art.

Today

Unwavering passion

Guided by the Garzoni family, Villa Castagnola evolves gracefully, honoring tradition while striving for excellence, and maintaining a level of hospitality that is truly exceptional.
